Verdict — by crew size

Never one global recommendation

Pick your shop. The verdict is segmented by crew size — never one global recommendation. This is the answer first; the axis scores and the evidence that back it follow below.

All four verdicts · always on file
Solo · 1
Solo · 1: Recommended for iOS-equipped solo operators. The $29/mo Starter (unlimited users, job-volume tiers) is the de facto entry, and the Free tier genuinely suits very-low-volume early-stage solos (lost-student-help, eomeet). The iOS mobile app is the standout — invoice and capture photos from the job, no dispatcher overhead (TrailsideHandyman). One honest caveat: it can be more than a true one-man shop needs — Plenty-Bedroom6787 found SM8+Xero "overkill" and left for a single-app tool — and you must be on an iPhone/iPad to get the full field experience (the Android "Lite" app is feature-limited). Best for solos who want room to grow on Apple devices; a minimalist single-app tool may suit a pure one-man shop better.
Crew · 2–5
Crew · 2–5: Strongly recommended — this is ServiceM8's sweet spot. The $79/mo Growing tier fits an active 2-5 crew, and unlimited users means no per-seat penalty as you add techs. Scheduling plus automatic ETA texts shine for a small team (jassem91 "game changer"), and Trick-Necessary4601 notes it only really earns its keep above ~3 staff — i.e. precisely this band. Strong recommend provided the field crew is on Apple devices; the Android-Lite limitation is the one cross-cutting risk.
Crew · 5–20
Crew · 5–20: Recommended, but watch the reporting ceiling. $79 Growing or $149 Premium by job volume, with unlimited users remaining a real advantage over per-seat competitors. The caveat grows louder here: H-E-BSport50 (ex-Jobber) found the lack of profitability reporting and payment-status visibility "becoming problematic," and GeekCohenAU found the pre-field/CRM side clunky enough to build their own module. Recommended for 5-20 crews whose needs are operational (jobs/scheduling/invoicing); if you need deep financial/profitability reporting or a real sales-CRM pipeline, evaluate that gap before committing. Lower-confidence than the 2-5 verdict — large-crew operator data thins out at this size.
Crew · 20+
Crew · 20+: Likely outgrown — low-confidence recommendation. The reporting/profitability and payment-visibility gaps that merely irritate at 5-20 (H-E-BSport50) become structural at 20+, the CRM/pre-field weakness (GeekCohenAU) compounds, and there is essentially no first-hand 20+ operator evidence in the community pull to vouch for it at that scale. 20+ operations should evaluate higher-tier FSM platforms (the simPro / ServiceTitan class) for reporting depth — ServiceM8 is built around, and validated by the community for, solo-through-small-team operations. Flagged explicitly as low-confidence due to thin large-crew data.
